It is with great pleasure that we see the VERGOTIA revived this year in Lixouri, upgraded and enhanced. Warm congratulations to the Gymnastics Association of Kefalonia (G.E.K.), which, with consistency, dedication, and continuous effort, succeeded in elevating this meeting to the Challenger level of the Continental Tour, officially included in the World Athletics calendar, thus casting a new light on our island.

Congratulations also to SEGAS, which recognized the value of this initiative by the people of G.E.K., proposed and achieved the upgrade of the meeting as early as the autumn of 2022.

Congratulations to the Municipality of Lixouri, which wholeheartedly and immediately supported this effort by hosting the meeting.

Congratulations to all the sponsors for their financial support.

The first “Vergotia” were held in September 1958 by the then municipal authorities, as a tangible expression of gratitude to national benefactor Georgios Ch. Vergottis, who once again promptly responded to a request/idea by the teachers of secondary education and others, and funded the design and construction of the stadium.

This stadium was built on a marshy area of Koutavos, which had been filled in with the rubble from Argostoli after the 1953 earthquakes.

This year, exactly 60 years since the passing of Georgios Ch. Vergottis, it would be only fitting for VERGOTIA 2025 to take place in the stadium he donated to his beloved hometown.

Unfortunately, the stadium remains officially “unfit” for use…

VERGOTIA 2025… let’s GO!

We hope, first and foremost, that the people of Lixouri will embrace the event and flock to the Municipal Stadium of Agios Antonios.

And, in the spirit of a sporting outing, we hope Kefalonians from all across the island will fill the stands, to enjoy up close a unique event marked by top-level performances, powerful emotions, and genuine sportsmanship.

And of course, to cheer on the young athletes of G.E.K. who have reached the level required to participate in such a high-standard international competition.

We welcome the athletes who have traveled to Kefalonia and wish everyone fair play and the best of luck!

The George & Marie Vergottis Foundation is pleased to announce another summer of musical activities to take place during the period of July 27 – August 13. For a third year in a row we will continue with our free music workshops for Kefalonia children, with classes in voice (classical singing), piano, and violin. We will also offer a range of concerts for the music-loving residents and visitors to our island, which highlight and promote the music of Greek composers from the Ionian Islands and our musical tradition.

All performances this year will be hosted at the theatre of the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia in Argostoli. Unfortunately, the Vergottis Cultural Center in Kourkoumelata suffered earthquake damage and is not allowed to host any events until the repairs are completed.

We would like to thank Mrs. Krilovici, Mrs. Zhulla, and Mr. Varvaresos for their generous offer of these free-of-charge music workshops, transferring and sharing their experience and talent to help the residents of Kefalonia. We would like to express our gratitude to the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia and its Board—particularly this year—for the continued collaboration with our Foundation and for hosting our events.

We look forward to this upcoming summer season, where we will get to see our old friends and greet new ones.

Press release – 2013 national entrance exams

Yesterday’s concert at Kourkoumelata was a double celebration of the “excellents”.

It began with the amazing concert of the Olympus Trio, a young chamber music group consisting of Regi Papa (violin), Ben Capps (cello) and Konstantinos Vallianato (piano) – who are proud of their origins, as the name of the group “Olympus” indicates (Ben Capps’ mother is Mrs. Leonora Kouri). All three are young, multi-award-winning musicians, graduates of the famous Juilliard School in New York with a Master of Music, where they met. Their first public appearance in Greece was in January this year at the Athens Concert Hall and their second at Kourkoumelata, where they enchanted the audience by presenting works by Shostakovich, Hatzis and Beethoven.

The second part of the evening, the Georgios & Maris Vergotis Foundation awarded the top three students from each Track in the recent Panhellenic exams. The Foundation’s guests at the concert were their parents and siblings, as well as the Education Inspectorate of Kefalonia and the Region. The awardees, who received a total amount of €13,000, were:

Barbara-Maria Markatou – 18.42 – 2nd General High School (Argostoli)

Theoretical Track

Special mention was made of the teachers Mr. Zervos (Ithaca), Mr. Christoforato (Kerameies), and Mr. Pliakis (Lixouri), who were chosen by the top student of each track respectively as the teachers who contributed the most to their personal success.

The eclectic, extremely interesting and pluralistic summer events program of the “George and Mari Vergoti” Public Benefit Foundation, based in Kourkoumelata, Kefalonia, promises musical encounters of high aesthetics and prestige this year as well.

The programming of the events has been done in such a way as to meet the following prerequisites:

To hold recitals and concerts of international level, with an emphasis on rising young artists, whose proceeds will be donated to the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia and other Foundations of Kefalonia.

To promote the musical heritage of the Ionian Islands, while simultaneously supporting music education.

To foster collaboration and highlight the work of public-benefit Foundations and Associations of Kefalonia.

This year’s program consists of two concert series: Opera, curated by the renowned Greek-Romanian soprano Marina Krilovitsi, and chamber music coordinated by the internationally acclaimed Greek pianist Vassilis Varvaresos, in cooperation with the Foka-Kosmetatou Foundation. At the heart of summer, from July 4 to 27, distinguished personalities of the global music scene such as the British chamber music group Jigsaw Players (musicians from the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, and their collaborators), the Korean-American Soyeon Kate Lee, and the Israeli Ran Dank, along with many internationally distinguished Greek artists, will gather on the beautiful Ionian island to enchant Greeks and foreigners with their art, as well as offer piano, violin, voice, and flute workshops for the children of Kefalonia.

Soyeon Kate Lee, Ran Dank, and Vassilis Varvaresos, all graduates of the famous Juilliard School in New York and assistants to professor Julian Martin at the same institution, are three young and highly awarded pianists who will share their art and personal experiences with young pianists in a Masterclass held at the Vergotis Cultural Center in Kourkoumelata. The purpose of the Masterclass, which takes place from July 4 to 11, is among other things to strengthen the relationship between Juilliard and the scholarships arising from the “Georgios & Maris Vergotis” endowment based in Kefalonia. The proceeds of the Masterclass, which will conclude with a free concert by the participants on July 11 in Kourkoumelata, will be allocated to support music education provided by the Philharmonics of Kefalonia.

Marina Krilovitsi will also give a Masterclass for young rising artists of the Lyric Theatre, with the participation of the well-known pianist Dimitris Yiakas, from July 18 to 26 at the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia in Argostoli. This workshop will also conclude with a celebratory concert by the participants on July 26 at the theater of the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia.

Beyond the educational importance of the events, there is also purely recreational entertainment in terms of high-level listening. Twelve evenings in July promise an equal number of recitals and concerts, hosted at five different locations across Kefalonia: at the Vergotis Cultural Center in Kourkoumelata, the Municipal Theaters of Argostoli and Lixouri, the Philharmonic School of Kefalonia (Argostoli Conservatory), and the Botanical Garden of the Foka-Kosmetatou Foundation, as well as a free piano workshop for students of Kefalonia at the Korgialenios Library (Argostoli).

The music events program opens on July 6 with a recital at the Municipal Theater of Argostoli by three Juilliard graduates who studied with the “G & M Vergotis” scholarship: Areti Zoula (violin), Regi Alexandros Papas (violin), and Konstantinos Vallianatos (piano). Their program includes works by Moszkowski, Bartók, Ravel, Liszt, and de Sarasate. The proceeds of the concert will be fully contributed to the financial support of the Philharmonic of Kefalonia.

Following:

On July 9, a piano recital by Soyeon Kate Lee and Ran Dank. Proceeds will support music education provided by the Philharmonics of Kefalonia.
On July 10, a recital by Areti Zoula (violin) and Vassilis Varvaresos (piano). Proceeds will be fully donated for the financial support of the Philharmonic School of Lixouri.
On July 11, a concert by the participants of the Masterclass for young pianists.
On July 13, a recital by the Olympus Trio, namely Ben Capps (cello), Regi Alexandros Papas (violin), and Konstantinos Vallianatos (piano).
On July 15, 17, and 19, the Jigsaw Players give three concerts, each with a different program. The co-organizer of these three concerts is the Foka-Kosmetatou Foundation.
The Opera cycle from July 21 to 27 begins with two concerts devoted, according to the event organizers’ tradition, to the Ionian School. After last year’s tribute to D. Lavragas, this year it is the turn of Pavlos Carrer (1829-1896). On July 21, the internationally recognized Greek soloists Irini Karagianni, Giannis Christopoulos, and Sofia Kyanidou, accompanied at the piano by Dimitris Yiakas, present a program with songs and arias from the operas of the Zakynthian composer. On July 24, soprano Irini Karagianni and tenor Giannis Christopoulos, accompanied at the piano by Dimitris Yiakas, curate an evening of Ionian Opera, selecting and singing excerpts from operas and operettas by Pavlos Carrer, Spyros Samaras, Leonidas Alvanas, Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Dionysios Lavragas, and Stathis Mastoras.
On July 26, the recital of the students of Marina Krilovitsi’s workshop takes place.
The events close festively on July 27 with a concert dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. Excerpts from his famous operas “Rigoletto,” “Traviata,” “Don Carlos,” and “Il Corsaro” will be performed by Irina Iordachescu – soprano at the Romanian National Opera – and Dimitris Tiliakos, accompanied at the piano by Dimitris Yiakas.

Summer 2013 plans have been finalized and are ready to share!

We have planned twelve (12) concerts in total, starting July 5 and ending July 27.

There are eight (8) chamber music events during the first two weeks and four (4) opera-song recitals during the last week of our musical summer.

Our concerts will present 20 exciting young artists—10 from Greece and the other 10 from 8 different countries: Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, Korea, Romania, and the USA.

The events will be hosted at the Vergottis Cultural Centre in Kourkoumelata, the Municipal Theatres of Argostoli and Lixouri, the Botanical Garden of the Fokas-Kosmetatos Foundation, and the Kefalonia Philharmonic School (Argostoli Conservatory).

We hope to see you all at most of our events, to experience live the enchanting artistry of our musicians and to show your support for the Kefalonia Philharmonic School and other Kefalonia Foundations that will benefit from the proceeds of these concerts.
